And out of all of this, two seconds of two women kissing in a Star Wars movie is supposed to be meaningful? It’s assumed that because Star Wars is so popular, a moment like this might “change attitudes.” But, in fact, these inclusions reflect attitudes: They reflect a Disney that’s finally willing to let two people of the same sex kiss-or, in the Endgame case, refer to each other as partners. All of this-the warped studio products down to the most minuscule ephemera-counts toward the history of queer representation. Truly, I am not sure we give it enough credit. For all its absences and impossibilities, the visual history of queer representation remains vast. But look how far it lags behind the rest of the vast history of queer representation in the visual arts, broadly speaking, worldwide: from movies going back as far as silent cinema (Carl Theodor Dreyer’s Michael, from 1924) and encompassing the passionate political work made at the height of the AIDS crisis, to every photo you’ve ever seen of gay sailors, to the radical queer feminism of artists like Barbara Hammer, to-of course-the overwhelming amount of queer art in the fantasy genre, all of it implicitly kin to Star Wars.Īnd that’s merely if we’re starting from the 20th century-I could go on and on, further and further back. One gay kiss in Star Wars is only an advancement in the world of Star Wars. Sure, it’s significant for Star Wars-just as Endgame’s gay Russo is “significant” for its movie, because these things had never happened in those contexts before.īut these movies were released in 2019-and that, if no other reason, suggests that we need a new, better context. And yet there’s a warped undertone to this entire conversation-one in which two seconds of two women kissing is, somehow, significant. It is undeniable that franchise fare has taken over the world of movies, and hardly only in the U.S. I knew that the two-second peck between two women that I saw-just barely, I almost blinked and missed it-was a moment that some people must have gone into the film expecting to see, because the studio and/or filmmakers had already patted themselves on the back for it. As soon as those women appeared onscreen I knew, instinctively, that at some point, someone associated with Skywalker must already have hinted at the film’s “LGBT representation” early in its press cycle. Abrams’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker-the ninth film in the storied Star Wars saga, and a sure-fire box office hit, per Mickey Mouse’s grand design-was Google “star wars gay kiss.” Not because I needed to verify that the moment in question really happened-I’d seen it for myself: a brief flash of two women kissing late in the movie, among a crowd of characters, humanoid and not, all of them hugging, kissing, and cheering away. Man.Another hit movie, another crumb of gay pandering, another round of the usual complaints.
